At Spruce, we humbly consider ourselves a new-fashioned flower design studio. While rooted in exceptional design and old-fashioned service, we are driven by innovating and improving the experience of sending flowers. From creating a website that makes it easy to order from our collection online, to providing custom arrangements with our "Creative Director" option, we want to make sure the process of ordering flowers with Spruce is above and beyond the industry standard. We employ technology to communicate with our customers at every step of the order process, from sending a photo of the "Creative Director" bouquet you've trusted us to make for you, to sending the lucky recipient a heads-up text when we're on our way with their delivery.
A NEW-FASHIONED APPROACH TO FLOWER DELIVERY
Our simple and organic approach to design relies on allowing the flowers to do what they do best: make us feel good while bringing a little beauty into our lives. We are (super!) passionate about flowers and live to share our love of flowers with others through each and every arrangement our design team carefully assembles. Whether we are creating a custom bouquet for you at our ‘Flower Bar’, collaborating over flowers for your wedding or special event, or teaching floral design at one of our classes, we love to witness the joy and wonder flowers bring to our lives.
Chicago Avenue (Minneapolis) 2010 - 2016
France Avenue (Edina) 2013- 2018
Northeast Minneapolis 2017 - Today
Spruce opened its doors for the first time back in the Spring of 2010 in the quaint neighborhood of 48th and Chicago - the part of South Minneapolis our founder Amy Backman called home. For years, she had been passively searching for the perfect location to open her first shop. Opportunity presented itself and she formally created a business plan, received funding, and quit her corporate career (during a recession) to open Spruce's first store. It was here at our Flower Bar that we held our first flower arranging classes, a program which has grown and expanded with each new location! In 2013, opportunity knocked again, this time at the preeminent shopping district at 50th & France. We found the perfect sliver of a space and built our display cooler into the front window to surprise and delight people as they strolled down France Avenue.
After managing two locations, and realizing that the bulk of our business was shifting toward online and phone orders, we decided to begin to reduce our retail footprint. We moved from our Chicago Avenue location to our spacious studio in 2017 and have been delivering flowers, hosting classes, and designing weddings and events there ever since. In late 2020 Amy retired, Simon May and Dean Miller entered stage left to continue and build on the foundations of success that Amy had built.
The team loved every moment of creating those original stores, designing the interiors, merchandising the coolers and plants, and most importantly, meeting so many great people in these neighborhoods. We are so lucky to still call so many of our original Chicago Ave and France Avenue customers and friends today. Looking forward, Spruce continues to evolve, bringing fresh flowers and plants to our customers across the twin cities metro, providing refreshing designs and superior quality products with flair and always with the customer in mind.
THE SPRUCE TEAM
In 1988, Amy landed an after school job at a family-owned florist in the small town she grew up in. After attaining a degree in retail merchandising, she entered the corporate world gaining valuable experience in product design, display, vendor relations and marketing. During her corporate years she began honing a vision to create a new-fashioned flower shop experience. With a belief that giving flowers feels as good as receiving flowers, she decided to follow her dream and open Spruce. Inspired by good design, whether classic, modern or organic, she leads a team of talented Twin Cities' florist and designers to deliver artistically crafted flower arrangements in the Twin Cities. Outside of flowers, Amy is energized by music, from the Beastie Boys to Beethoven, and has played the cello as long as she’s been working with flowers.
