We humbly consider ourselves a new-fashioned flower design studio. While rooted in exceptional design and old-fashioned service, we also are driven by thinking of new ways to improve the experience of giving and receiving flowers. From creating a website that makes it easy to order something from our collection, to providing options like our "Creative Director" that allows you to take the lead and challenge us with your vision we want to make sure the process of ordering flowers is above and beyond the industry standards. We also employ technology to communicate with you about your order, from sending you a photo of the "Creative Director" bouquet you've trusted us to make for you, to sending recipients a heads-up text when we're on our way with flowers to ensure a successful delivery.
A NEW-FASHIONED APPROACH TO FLOWER DELIVERY
Our approach to design is simple and organic - allowing the flowers to do what they do best: make us feel good and bring a little beauty into our lives. We're passionate about flowers and we like to share our love of floral design with others. Whether watching as we create a custom floral bouquet for you at our ‘Flower Bar’, collaborating about flowers for your wedding or special event, or taking one of our classes, we love what flowers do for people.
Chicago Avenue (Minneapolis) 2010 - 2016
France Avenue (Edina) 2013- 2018
Northeast Minneapolis 2017 - Today
Spruce opened the door for the first time back in the Spring of 2010 in a quaint neighborhood at 48th and Chicago - the part of South Minneapolis our founder Amy Backman calls home. For years, she had been passively searching for the perfect location to open her first shop. Opportunity presented itself and she formally created a business plan, received funding, and quit her corporate career (during a recession) to open Spruce's first store. It was here that we held our first floral arranging classes at our Flower Bar, and have done so ever since.
In 2013, opportunity knocked again, this time at the prestigious shopping district at 50th & France. We found the perfect sliver of a space and built our display cooler into the front window to surprise and delight people as they strolled down France Avenue.
But, after managing two locations, and realizing that at the bulk of our business was shifting toward online and phone orders, we decided to begin to reduce our retail footprint. We moved from our Chicago Avenue location to our spacious studio in 2017 and have been delivering flowers, hosting classes, and designing weddings and events there ever since.
We loved every moment of creating these stores, designing the interiors, merchandising the coolers and plants, and most importantly, meeting so many great people in these neighborhoods. We are so lucky to still call so many of our original Chicago Ave and France Avenue customers and friends.
THE SPRUCE TEAM
In 1988, Amy landed an after school job at a family-owned florist in the small town she grew up in. After attaining a degree in retail merchandising, she entered the corporate world gaining valuable experience in product design, display, vendor relations and marketing. During her corporate years she began honing a vision to create a new-fashioned flower shop experience. With a belief that giving flowers feels as good as receiving flowers, she decided to follow her dream and open Spruce. Inspired by good design, whether classic, modern or organic, she leads a team of talented Twin Cities' florist and designers to deliver artistically crafted flower arrangements in the Twin Cities. Outside of flowers, Amy is energized by music, from the Beastie Boys to Beethoven, and has played the cello as long as she’s been working with flowers.
